Learn About Dry Eye Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Dry Eye Syndrome

Your eyes are incredible organs that allow you to see and experience the world around you. They blink over 15,000 times a day to spread a thin layer of tear film across their surface, ensuring they stay moist and comfortable. But what happens when this natural mechanism doesn’t work as it should? That’s when Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) can occur, causing discomfort and affecting your vision. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the causes, symptoms, and treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome, and why seeking professional care at Legazpi Eye Center is essential. Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) Dry Eye Syndrome, often simply referred to as “dry eyes,” is a common eye condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough quality tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Tears are essential for maintaining the health of the front surface of your eyes and for providing clear vision. When the quantity or quality of your tears is insufficient, it can lead to discomfort, irritation, and other symptoms associated with DES. Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome Dry Eye Syndrome can result from various factors, and sometimes, it’s a combination of these causes. Some common causes include: Aging: As you get older, tear production typically decreases, making older adults more susceptible to DES. Environmental Factors: Exposure to dry or windy climates, high temperatures, or areas with low humidity can increase the risk of developing dry eyes. Digital Devices: Prolonged use of digital screens, such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, can reduce the frequency of blinking and lead to digital eye strain, exacerbating DES symptoms. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and autoimmune diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome, can contribute to dry eyes. Medications: Some medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, and antidepressants, can reduce tear production. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control, can lead to dry eyes. Common Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome Recognizing the symptoms of DES is crucial for seeking timely treatment. Some of the most common signs and symptoms include: Dryness: A persistent dry sensation in the eyes, often described as a gritty or sandy feeling. Redness: Bloodshot or red eyes can be a symptom of DES due to irritation. Burning or Stinging: You may experience a burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, especially in windy or dry environments. Blurry Vision: Your vision may become intermittently blurry, affecting your ability to see clearly. Excessive Tearing: Paradoxically, some people with DES may have watery eyes, as the eyes try to compensate for the lack of moisture. Light Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) can be a symptom of DES. Eye Fatigue: Tired, strained eyes, especially after prolonged screen time or reading, can indicate dry eyes. Difficulty Wearing Contact Lenses: Contact lens wearers may find their lenses uncomfortable and difficult to wear when they have dry eyes. Treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome Fortunately, several treatment options are available to alleviate the discomfort associated with DES and improve your eye health. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of your condition and its underlying causes. Here are some common treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome: Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter artificial tear drops or prescription eye drops can help lubricate the eyes and provide relief from dryness. Lifestyle Modifications: Simple changes in your daily routine, such as taking regular breaks from digital screens, using a humidifier in dry indoor environments, and staying hydrated, can reduce DES symptoms. Prescription Medications: In more severe cases, your ophthalmologist may prescribe medications like anti-inflammatory eye drops or medications that increase tear production. Punctal Plugs: Tiny plugs can be inserted into the tear ducts to block drainage and keep the eyes moist. LipiFlow®: An advanced treatment that uses thermal pulsation technology to remove blockages in the meibomian glands, which can improve tear quality. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy: IPL therapy can reduce inflammation in the meibomian glands, improving the quality of your tears. Contact Lenses vs Glasses: Which is Better For You?

Love Your Children’s Eyes: 7 Things Our Pediatric Ophthalmologist Wants You to Know About Your Children’s Vision If you’re among the millions of people worldwide who rely on vision correction, you may find yourself constantly thinking about this dilemma: contacts or glasses? Both options have their merits, and the choice ultimately depends on your lifestyle, comfort preferences, and eye health. In this blog post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of contacts and glasses, helping you make an informed decision about which option is better suited for you. Glasses: Everyone’s Classic Choice Glasses have been a staple in the world of vision correction for centuries, and for good reason. They offer several benefits that have stood the test of time. Ease of Use: Unlike contacts that require direct handling and insertion into the eyes, glasses are easy to wear and remove. Simply put them on your face, and you’re good to go. Style and Fashion: Glasses have become more than just a vision-correcting tool; they are now a fashion statement. With a wide variety of frames, shapes, and colors available, you can find glasses that match your personal style and enhance your overall appearance. Eye Protection: Glasses not only correct your vision but also provide a layer of protection for your eyes. They shield your eyes from dust, debris, and harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of eye irritation and damage. Minimal Eye Irritation: For some individuals, contacts can cause eye irritation or discomfort due to dryness or allergies. Glasses eliminate this issue, making them a preferred option for those with sensitive eyes. No Need for Touching Your Eyes: If you’re squeamish about touching your eyes or worried about eye infections, glasses are a safer and more hygienic choice. Contacts: Offers a World of Freedom Contact lenses have revolutionized the way people experience vision correction. They offer a level of freedom and flexibility that glasses cannot match. Natural Vision: Contacts sit directly on your eyes, providing a more natural field of view compared to glasses, which have frames that may obstruct peripheral vision. Enhanced Sports and Physical Activities: Contacts don’t interfere with sports or physical activities like glasses can. You can enjoy better stability and a wider range of motion without worrying about glasses slipping or breaking. Better Compatibility with Safety Equipment: If your work or hobbies involve wearing safety equipment, such as goggles or helmets, contacts won’t interfere with the fit, providing a more comfortable and secure experience. Cosmetic Benefits: For those who prefer not to wear glasses or want to change their eye color, contacts offer cosmetic options, such as colored or tinted lenses. No Fogging or Reflections: Weather conditions, such as rain or extreme temperature changes, can cause glasses to fog up, hindering your vision. Contacts don’t have this issue, allowing for clear and uninterrupted sight. Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Glasses and Contacts Ultimately, the choice between contacts and glasses depends on several factors. Lifestyle: Consider your daily activities and hobbies. If you’re frequently active, involved in sports, or have a physically demanding job, contacts might be the better choice. On the other hand, if you spend long hours in front of a computer or prefer a low-maintenance option, glasses may suit you better. Convenience: Contacts require more care and maintenance than glasses. If you’re willing to invest time in cleaning, disinfecting, and inserting contacts daily, they might be a viable option. However, if you prefer a straightforward and hassle-free solution, glasses are the way to go. Eye Health: Your eye health should be a primary consideration. Some individuals may have specific eye conditions or allergies that make contacts less suitable. Consult with our eye care professionals at Legazpi Eye Center to ensure you choose a safe and appropriate option. Budget: Cost can also be a deciding factor. While initial eyeglass frames and lenses may be more expensive, contacts can accumulate higher costs over time due to the need for replacements and cleaning solutions. Style and Appearance: Your personal style and how you want to present yourself to the world matter. If you see glasses as an opportunity to express your fashion sense, they might be the perfect accessory for you. On the other hand, contacts offer a more natural look without the frame. The Best of Both Worlds: Combination Solutions Sometimes, the best vision correction solution involves a combination of contacts and glasses. Some individuals opt for both, using contacts for specific activities and glasses for the rest of the day. This combination provides the flexibility to enjoy the benefits of each option as needed. Ultimately, the choice between contacts and glasses is a personal one. Whether you prefer the classic charm of glasses or the freedom of contacts, the key is to prioritize your comfort, vision needs, and eye health. Consulting with our eye care professionals at Legazpi Eye Center can help you make an informed decision tailored to your unique circumstances. Remember, the goal is to achieve clear and comfortable vision so that you can fully enjoy life’s experiences.  To schedule an in-person consultation, book an appointment here.

Love Your Children’s Eyes: 7 Things Our Pediatric Ophthalmologist Wants You to Know About Your Children’s Vision

Love Your Children’s Eyes: 7 Things Our Pediatric Ophthalmologist Wants You to Know About Your Children’s Vision As parents, we always want the best for our children – from providing them with a loving and nurturing environment to ensuring they have the best possible health and well-being. One essential aspect of their overall health that should never be overlooked is their vision. Your child’s eyes play a crucial role in their development and learning, making it vital to prioritize their eye health from an early age. To shed light on the importance of children’s eye health, we reached out to our pediatric ophthalmologist, Dr. Rena Bascuña. With extensive experience in caring for young patients, Dr. Bascuña has a wealth of knowledge and insights to share. Here are seven essential things she wants all parents to know about their children’s vision: Early Eye Exams are Crucial Contrary to popular belief, children should have their first comprehensive eye exam much earlier than what many parents assume. Dr. Bascuña advises that children should undergo their first eye exam at six months of age. This early assessment allows us to detect any potential eye problems that might affect their visual development. Subsequent eye exams should be scheduled at age three and again before starting school. Vision Problems are Not Always Obvious One common misconception is that children will always express discomfort or complain if they have vision problems. However, this is not always the case. Children might not realize that what they see is not normal, as they have no basis for comparison. Dr. Bascuña emphasizes the importance of regular eye exams to catch any hidden vision issues that could affect their learning and development. Screen Time Affects Eye Health In today’s digital age, children are exposed to screens from an early age, be it smartphones, tablets, or computers. While technology can be educational and entertaining, excessive screen time can strain their eyes and lead to digital eye strain. Dr. Bascuña advises limiting screen time and following the “20-20-20” rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and look at something 20 feet away. Encourage outdoor activities to give their eyes a much-needed break. Proper Lighting is Essential Proper lighting plays a significant role in preserving your child’s eye health. Dim lighting can strain their eyes, leading to discomfort and potential vision problems. On the other hand, excessive brightness can be just as harmful. Dr. Bascuña recommends ensuring a well-lit environment for reading and studying, avoiding glare from windows or light sources. Vision Affects Learning Clear vision is essential for your child’s learning and development. Undetected vision problems can hinder their ability to read, write, and participate in class effectively. As parents, we must be attentive to signs of difficulty in school tasks, squinting, frequent headaches, or rubbing of the eyes, as these might indicate vision issues. Protective Eyewear for Sports For active kids who enjoy sports and outdoor activities, protective eyewear is a must. Dr. Bascuña stresses the importance of wearing sports goggles or protective eyewear that meets safety standards for sports like basketball, soccer, and racquetball. These measures can prevent eye injuries that might have long-term consequences on their vision. Nurture Eye Health with a Balanced Diet A balanced diet not only benefits overall health but also supports eye health. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and zinc, such as carrots, oranges, spinach, and nuts, promote healthy vision. Dr. Bascuña advises parents to incorporate these nutrient-rich foods into their children’s diet to support their visual development. Remember, early detection and intervention are key to ensuring your child’s eye health and well-being. Dr. Bascuña and our dedicated team at Legazpi Eye Center are here to provide expert care and guidance for your children’s vision needs. We encourage you to schedule regular eye exams for your little ones and reach out to us if you have any concerns about their eyesight. Love your children’s eyes and give them the gift of clear vision and a bright future. With proper eye care and attention, you can help your children see the world in all its beauty and wonder. At Legazpi Eye Center, one of our missions is to nurture their vision and support their growth and development to the fullest.

The Best Glasses for Your Face Shape and Skin Tone

Glasses for different face shapes and skin tones

The Best Glasses for Your Face Shape and Skin Tone Finding the perfect pair of glasses can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it’s essential to choose frames that not only enhance your vision but also flatter your face shape and complement your skin tone. In this guide, we’ll explore how to select the best glasses for your face shape and skin tone, helping you make a stylish and confident choice. Understanding Face Shapes The first step in finding the right glasses is identifying your face shape. Here are the most common face shapes and the frames that work well for each:  Oval FaceCharacteristics: Balanced proportions, softly rounded forehead, and chin. Best Frames: Most frame styles complement an oval face shape. Experiment with different shapes, such as square, rectangular, or cat-eye frames, to accentuate your features. Round FaceCharacteristics: Full cheeks, equal width and length, and a curved jawline. Best Frames: Opt for angular frames like square, rectangular, or geometric shapes to add definition to your facial structure. Avoid round or circular frames, as they can make your face appear rounder. Square FaceCharacteristics: Strong jawline, broad forehead, and a square or rectangular shape. Best Frames: Look for frames with rounded or curved edges to soften your angular features. Oval, round, or cat-eye frames can create a flattering balance and add a touch of elegance. Heart-Shaped FaceCharacteristics: Wide forehead, high cheekbones, and a narrow chin. Best Frames: Choose frames with wider bottoms to balance the face shape. Aviator, cat-eye, or round frames can complement your features and draw attention downward. Oblong FaceCharacteristics: Longer face shape with a straighter forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. Best Frames: Opt for wider frames that add width to your face. Square, rectangular, or oversized frames can create a balanced look and add depth to your facial features. Determining Skin Tone In addition to face shape, considering your skin tone is crucial when selecting glasses frames. Here are some tips to match your frames to your skin tone: Warm Skin Tone Characteristics: Yellow or golden undertonesBest Frame Colors: Choose frames in warm tones like brown, tortoiseshell, gold, or olive green. These hues will complement your skin tone and bring out its warmth. Cool Skin Tone Characteristics: Pink or bluish undertonesBest Frame Colors: Opt for frames in cool tones like black, silver, gray, or shades of blue and purple. These colors will harmonize with your skin tone and create a flattering contrast. Neutral Skin Tone Characteristics: A balance of warm and cool undertonesBest Frame Colors: You have the flexibility to experiment with both warm and cool tones. Consider frames in classic colors like brown, black, or tortoiseshell, or try trendy shades that suit your personal style. Matching Face Shape and Skin Tone Now that you have an understanding of face shapes and skin tones, let’s explore how to combine these factors to find your ideal glasses frames: Complementary Contrast If you have a round face and warm skin tone, consider rectangular frames in warm hues to create a complementary contrast. This combination will add angles to your facial structure and enhance your natural warmth. Soft and Subtle For heart-shaped faces with cool skin tones, opt for round or cat-eye frames in cool tones. These softer shapes will counterbalance the sharpness of your face shape, while the cool colors will harmonize with your skin tone. Bold and Edgy Square-faced individuals with warm skin tones can experiment with oversized frames in bold colors like tortoiseshell or deep red. These frames will add a fashionable edge to your look while highlighting your warm undertones. Selecting the best glasses for your face shape and skin tone can elevate your style and enhance your overall appearance. By considering the features of your face shape and understanding your skin tone, you can confidently choose frames that complement your unique attributes. How to Prevent Eye Injuries at Home and at Work Our eyes are precious organs that play a vital role in our daily lives, allowing us to see and experience the world around us. However, they are also vulnerable to injuries, both at home and in the workplace. Eye injuries can range from minor irritations to severe damage that can lead to permanent vision loss. The good news is that many eye injuries are preventable by taking simple precautions and following safety guidelines. In this blog, we will explore effective strategies and practical tips to help you prevent eye injuries, ensuring the well-being of your eyes and maintaining good vision. Understanding Common Eye Injuries Before delving into prevention methods, it’s crucial to understand the types of eye injuries that can occur. Common eye injuries include foreign object penetration, chemical burns, blunt trauma, corneal abrasions, and exposure to harmful radiation. Each type requires specific preventive measures, and being aware of potential risks can significantly reduce the chances of an accident. Eye Safety at Home Use Protective Eyewear When engaging in activities that pose a risk to your eyes, such as using power tools, gardening, or playing sports, always wear appropriate eye protection. Safety goggles or glasses with impact-resistant lenses are essential to shield your eyes from flying debris or accidental impacts. Be Mindful of Household Chemicals Take precautions when using cleaning agents, solvents, or any other chemicals that can cause eye irritation or burns. Wear protective gloves and ensure proper ventilation to minimize the risk of splashes or fumes reaching your eyes. Childproofing If you have children at home, make sure to childproof hazardous areas where eye injuries are more likely to occur, such as the kitchen. Keep harmful substances out of their reach and teach them about the importance of eye safety. Eye Safety in the Workplace Know the Hazards Familiarize yourself with the potential eye hazards in your workplace. Identify any machinery, chemicals, or materials that could pose a risk to your eyes and ensure that safety protocols are in place to minimize the danger. Wear Appropriate Eye Protection Depending on the nature of your work, wear safety goggles, face shields, or helmets with visors. Ensure that your protective eyewear fits properly, provides adequate coverage, and meets the required safety standards. Follow Safety Guidelines Adhere to workplace safety guidelines and procedures at all times. This includes using proper equipment, maintaining a clean and organized work area, and receiving training on eye safety protocols. Eye Safety for Digital Device Use Practice the 20-20-20 Rule When working on digital devices for extended periods, take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and focus on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and fatigue. Adjust Display Settings Optimize your device’s display settings to reduce eye strain. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and font size to ensure comfortable viewing. Consider using a blue light filter or wearing blue light-blocking glasses to protect your eyes from the potentially harmful effects of prolonged blue light exposure. Maintain Proper Ergonomics Position your device at an appropriate distance, slightly below eye level, and ensure proper lighting to minimize eye strain. Use an adjustable chair and desk to achieve a comfortable posture while working. Regular Eye Examinations Regular eye examinations are crucial for maintaining eye health and detecting any potential issues early on. Schedule routine check-ups with ophthalmologists at Legazpi Eye Center to monitor your vision, screen for eye conditions, and receive personalized guidance on eye safety and care. First Aid for Eye Injuries In the event of an eye injury, it’s crucial to know how to administer basic first aid until medical help is available. Avoid rubbing the affected eye, rinse gently with clean water if there are foreign objects or chemicals involved, and cover the eye with a sterile bandage or shield. Seek immediate medical attention for any eye injury, regardless of its severity. Preventing eye injuries is a responsibility we should all prioritize, both at home and in the workplace. By implementing these preventive measures and incorporating good eye safety practices into our daily routines, we can significantly reduce the risk of eye injuries and safeguard our vision. From Solo to Group Practice: How Legazpi Eye Center Successfully Gathered Multiple Ophthalmologists from Bicol and Manila

Group Practice

From Solo to Group Practice: How Legazpi Eye Center Successfully Gathered Multiple Ophthalmologists from Bicol and Manila In the heart of Bicol, where access to specialized eye care was once limited, two visionaries went on a mission to build a comprehensive eye care facility called Legazpi Eye Center. This blog delves into Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante’s journey from humble beginnings to the establishment of a thriving group practice that has gathered multiple ophthalmologists from Bicol and Manila. A Vision for Accessible Eye Care At a time when ophthalmology was relatively unknown in the province of Albay, Dr. Rollo introduced this specialized field and sought to build Legazpi Eye Center. Recognizing the need for innovation and acquisition of advanced technologies, Dr. Rollo maintained his practice in Manila while simultaneously building the Center with the help of Dr. Rosita. This approach allowed him to stay connected with the field and ensure that the highest standards of care were offered to Bicolanos. Nurturing Relationships and Building a Stellar Team One of the key challenges in expanding the reach and services of Legazpi Eye Center was the need for additional ophthalmologists. Dr. Rollo leveraged his network in Metro Manila, where he established strong connections through his practice at University of Santo Tomas Hospital. He began inviting his former students, who had become skilled ophthalmologists, to join him in Bicol. These were individuals he knew not only for their technical competence but also for their shared values and commitment to excellence. By forming a team of like-minded professionals, Legazpi Eye Center provided a wider range of services and catered to a growing patient base. Get to know our team of exceptional doctors here. Leveraging Synergies and Cost-effectiveness One of the significant advantages of transitioning from a solo practice to a group practice was the ability to pool resources and share expenses. Ophthalmic instruments are among the most expensive medical equipment. By joining forces, they could collectively invest in state-of-the-art technology and leverage each other’s specialties, enhancing the quality of care and treatment options available to their patients. Dr. Rosita’s Exceptional Role in Overcoming Administrative Challenges Transitioning from a partnership to a SEC-registered corporation presented the group with various regulatory and administrative hurdles. They had to navigate licensing requirements, implement point-of-sale systems, and establish efficient operational processes. Among the team, Dr. Rosita played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth transition and managing the administrative aspects needed to grow the practice. Her expertise in administration and operations proved invaluable, as she learned the intricacies of running a center that went beyond being a mere clinic. Because of this, Legazpi Eye Center emerged as an exemplar of operational excellence, combining medical expertise with efficient management practices to deliver outstanding patient care. Bringing Specialized Eye Care to Bicol  The group practice allowed Legazpi Eye Center to offer more comprehensive services to its existing patient base, primarily comprising adults and geriatric patients, and reach new segments such as pediatric patients. By assembling a team of skilled ophthalmologists, the Center brought world-class expertise to the region, eliminating the need for Bicolanos to travel to Manila for specialized eye care. The convenience and accessibility of specialized services within Bicol not only improved the quality of care but also reduced the financial burden on patients and their families.  Legazpi Eye Center continues to transform the landscape of eye care in Bicol, offering comprehensive services and bringing specialized expertise closer to the community. Through our unwavering commitment to excellence and patient-centric care, Legazpi Eye Center has not only improved the lives of countless individuals but also left an indelible mark on the region’s healthcare system.

How Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante Built Legazpi Eye Center in 1994 From Scratch and the Challenges They Faced – Copy

Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante

How Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante Built Legazpi Eye Center in 1994 From Scratch and the Challenges They Faced In the vast landscape of healthcare, there are individuals who go above and beyond to serve and empower their community. In 1994, Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante embarked on a journey to establish Legazpi Eye Center, an exceptional eye care facility in the Bicol Region. Their mission was to provide the highest level of quality eye care to Bicolanos with state-of-the-art technologies and solutions. This blog explores their inspiring story, the challenges they faced, and their unwavering commitment to the community. The Birth of Legazpi Eye Center Driven by a deep-rooted desire to serve their fellow Bicolanos, Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante set out to establish Legazpi Eye Center, a comprehensive eye care facility that would be accessible to all Bicolanos. Their vision was to bring cutting-edge technologies and top-notch services within reach for everyone in the region. Dr. Rollo’s extensive background in ophthalmology and his practice in Manila provided the foundation for this endeavor, ensuring that the Center would have access to the latest advancements in the field. However, as all journeys start, the two visionaries had to stumble first before reaching success.   Overcoming Financial Challenges Building an exceptional eye care center from scratch is not without its challenges. One of the initial hurdles they faced was securing the necessary capital to establish Legazpi Eye Center’s facilities. Ophthalmic instruments and equipment are costly, and acquiring them posed a significant financial burden. In addition, the maintenance of the instruments and equipment presented ongoing financial challenges as suppliers who were often based in Manila charged higher prices for their remote operations. To overcome this obstacle,  Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita sought financial support from their families who believed in their mission. Their determination to provide the best eye care to the community spurred them to find innovative solutions to these constraints. Striving for Work-Life Balance As they continue building Legazpi Eye Center, they wanted it to stay connected with the latest advancements in the field. Hence, Dr. Rollo continued his practice in Manila while simultaneously managing the Center. This arrangement required sacrifices in terms of work-life balance, as Dr. Rollo would travel back and forth between Manila and Legazpi, spending half of each month away from his family. While Dr. Rollo is away, Dr. Rosita’s immense support and administration skills played a crucial role in managing the Center and their children. The couple’s unwavering dedication and the support of their families allowed them to navigate these challenges, ensuring the smooth operation and growth of Legazpi Eye Center.   Embracing Innovation and Continuous Learning Despite the challenges in work-life balance, Dr. Rollo saw the value of staying updated with the latest treatments and technologies in the field. Attending ophthalmic and optical conventions abroad, the couple seized the opportunity to bring cutting-edge advancements back to Legazpi Eye Center. This commitment to continuous learning and innovation ensured that the center could provide the best possible care to their patients, constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. But as one of the first eye care facilities in the region, they had to make sure the Center was properly introduced to the community so they can provide the best eye care that Bicolanos deserve.    Addressing the Community’s Awareness and Perception One of the significant hurdles that the Center faced was the community’s lack of awareness about the role of ophthalmologists. People still often associated eye care with EENT (eyes, ears, nose, throat) specialists even though they were already separate fields. To bridge this gap, Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita actively engaged with the community through medical missions. By personally connecting with the people and educating them about the benefits of specialized eye care, they successfully raised awareness and transformed the perception of eye health in the region. After more than 25 years, Legazpi Eye Center is the go-to eye care facility of nearly all Bicolanos and its evolution continues as they bring in new perspectives. The Next Generation To ensure the continued growth and success of Legazpi Eye Center, Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita brought in their children, who gained valuable experience outside the family business before joining them. Dr. Rachel Milante completed her Residency in Ophthalmology at St. Luke’s Medical Center, and furthered her specialization as a distinguished Fellow in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. On the other hand, Dr. Rainier Milante completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at East Avenue Medical Center and is currently pursuing a Certificate in Leadership in Medicine for Southeast Asia at the esteemed Harvard School of Medicine. Lastly,  Richard Milante, MBA, completed a Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering at Ateneo de Manila University and Master of Business Administration with a Health Sector Management Certificate at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in the United States. Each of them continues to contribute their expertise as the executive committee of Legazpi Eye Center, bringing fresh perspectives while honoring the legacy established by their parents. The journey of Dr. Rollo and Dr. Rosita Milante in building Legazpi Eye Center from scratch is a testament to their unwavering commitment to serving the people of the Bicol Region. Their perseverance, innovation, and dedication to excellence transformed a vision into reality, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of eye care. Legazpi Eye Center stands as a beacon of hope, providing top-notch eye care to all Bicolanos for more than 25 years.

The Importance of Comprehensive Eye Exams and Why You Should Care

The Importance of Comprehensive Eye Exams and Why You Should Care Your eyes help you perceive the world around you with clarity and beauty. Yet, it’s easy to take them for granted until a problem arises. That’s why comprehensive eye exams play a crucial role in maintaining optimal eye health and detecting potential issues early on. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the significance of comprehensive eye exams, exploring the various aspects they cover and why they should be a priority for everyone. Early Detection of Eye Conditions Comprehensive eye exams are not solely about testing your visual acuity. They involve a comprehensive evaluation of your overall eye health. During these exams, eye care professionals, such as optometrists and ophthalmologists, assess your eyes for a wide range of conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, and more. Detecting these conditions at an early stage is crucial for successful treatment and management. Regular eye exams can help identify potential problems before they progress, allowing for timely interventions and preventing irreversible damage. Vision Correction and Enhancement Many individuals rely on corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses, to address vision issues. However, vision changes over time, and your current prescription may not be providing optimal visual clarity. Comprehensive eye exams include a thorough assessment of your visual acuity, enabling eye care professionals to determine if your prescription needs adjustment. Updated prescriptions can enhance your vision, reduce eye strain, and improve overall visual comfort. Don’t settle for subpar vision when a simple eye exam can make a significant difference. Monitoring Eye Health Eye conditions and diseases often develop gradually and may not exhibit noticeable symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. Regular eye exams allow our optometrists and ophthalmologists to monitor changes in your eye health over time. By comparing previous and current exam results, they can detect subtle changes and identify potential risks early on. This proactive approach ensures appropriate management and intervention, providing the best chances for successful treatment and preserving your vision. Overall Health Insights Did you know that your eyes can reveal signs of underlying health conditions? Comprehensive eye exams can offer valuable insights into your overall well-being. During these exams, optometrists and ophthalmologists may detect signs of systemic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorders, and even certain types of cancers. Detecting these conditions early through an eye exam may prompt further evaluation and timely medical intervention, improving your overall health outcomes. Personalized Eye Care Recommendations Comprehensive eye exams are not only about diagnosis but also about providing personalized care recommendations tailored to your specific needs. Whether it’s managing dry eyes, preventing digital eye strain, or protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays, optometrists and ophthalmologists can offer valuable guidance and recommendations based on your exam results. They can educate you about proper eye care practices, suggest lifestyle modifications, and recommend suitable eyewear or treatments to address your unique eye health requirements. Your eyesight is a very important sense, and it deserves the utmost care and attention. Comprehensive eye exams are not something to overlook or postpone.
